A record number of experts on diabetes technology and treatment came together in Barcelona and online for the 15th ATTD Conference

The 15th anniversary of the International Conference on Advanced Technologies & Treatments for Diabetes (ATTD 2022), brought together a record number of experts in the field of diabetes treatment and technology in Barcelona and online. Over 4200 experts and practitioners from 100 countries discussed the most cutting-age technologies and scientific discoveries.

We were extremely happy to meet with the ATTD community in-person again. We are sure that these interactions will speed up the process from doing research and discussing ideas to creating products and new technologies that people with diabetes could use in their daily lives”, Founders and Conference Chairmen Prof. Moshe Phillip and Prof. Tadej Battelino shared during the first ATTD Press Conference.

15 years ago we didn’t even dream that this Conference will be so successful. In our first ATTD events, we talked about automatic insulin delivery systems, known as artificial pancreas. Back then it we looked at it as if it is a science fiction. Over the years we did a lot to push the field forward”, Prof. Phillip says on the occasion of the 15th year anniversary of the Conference.

ATTD started very humbly with a simple mission – to bring together all stakeholders in diabetes”, Prof. Battelino adds. He explains that what makes ATTD a unique conference, is that it does not only include diabetologists, nurse educators, dieticians, psychologists and social workers. It particularly focuses on those that develop new technologies such as engineers and pharmacies, as well as those who produce and market them – big international corporations and those that enable people to get them – the insurance systems and people, who do clinical research. Finally, the conference also invites patients – those who can select what the best solution for controlling diabetes is.

Throughout these 15 years the mission remained the same. We see that more and more people come to exchange opinions and advance ideas and I believe that these meetings have significantly accelerated the translation of new discoveries into what people with diabetes use in their everyday lives”, the Prof. Battelino concludes.

The 4-day scientific program included diverse topics including updates on COVID-19 and diabetes, artificial intelligence, telehealth, personalized medicine in diabetes, brain & diabetes, and of course, diabetes technology and innovations.

Every year the quality of the ATTD gathering is just profound. It keeps getting stronger and stronger. As a patient myself, I know that those of us who have access to good doctors are very lucky because we can see all the holistic parts of diabetes health… We must make sure that we use the very best learnings in the world and that we are working arm in arm with the health economists who can help point out what the best interventions are”, Kelly L. Close, Founder and Chair of the Board of the diaTribe Foundation President and Founder of Close Concerns shared in the press conference.

The press conference will be available on-demand on the ATTD virtual platform for up to 3 months after the end of ATTD 2022.

Awards

On the final day of the Conference, the 2022 ATTD Insulin Centennial Award was awarded to Prof. Stephanie Amiel. Prof. Amiel was recognized for the value and importance of continued innovation in diabetes, and award an exemplary individual for their work within diabetes innovation.

ATTD Yearbook

The ATTD conference also marked the publication of the 2021 ATTD Yearbook, which includes some of the most important peer‐reviewed manuscripts published in medical journals between July 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021. The book summarizes the key innovations in the treatment of diabetes in the last year.

The Yearbook includes an article entitled “COVID‐19 Pandemic and Diabetes Care,” where the role of telehealth in managing diabetes is discussed. Other articles deal with the advancement of the digital health technologies, with automated artificial intelligence–based decision support systems (advisors), continuous and intermittent glucose monitoring, digital/virtual diabetes clinics, and virtual training and education.

While the focus of the Yearbook is on technology and related topics, it also covers therapeutic areas, including the new insulins and insulin therapy, new medications for the treatment of diabetes.

The content of the ATTD 2021 Yearbook is free and available online here.

Insulcloud, an Innovative SME certified company that has developed the world’s first device that improves the quality of life of people with diabetes and their families, thanks to the real-time monitoring of the use of disposable insulin pens, has closed a financing round of 4 million euros.

The financing round was led by one of the world’s leading diabetes companies, as well as a key player for the company’s goals. This milestone is a great boost for the Spanish company’s 360 technology, as it facilitates its goal of providing, in real time, all the fundamental information needed for the daily control of people with diabetes. For example, blood glucose levels, insulin injected, physical activity or intake, which is automatically provided to each patient’s medical record.

Insulcloud was the first company in the world to develop a device compatible with disposable insulin pens to monitor their use and avoid potential risks. In addition, the company has launched a platform that allows different Health Management Systems to monitor patients with diabetes in real time.

“We are creating a future,” says José Luis López, CEO and founder of the company, “in which all relevant data on diabetes monitoring and control are directly and automatically stored in the patient’s own medical records. Technologically this is already possible and now is the time to push it forward”.
